Pastoral letter of H.G. Bishop John Michael BoteanSaturday, April 11. 2009 Beautiful. If you only read one Easter pastoral this year.... ROMANIAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE Eparchy of St. George in Canton P.O. Box 7189 Canton, OH 44705-0189 Tel: (330) 493-9355; Fax: (330) 493-9963 www.romaniancatholic.org April 11, 2009 Beloved brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Those of us who have been lifelong members of our Romanian Catholic parishes do not always have the sense that visitors and those who are newly joining our parishes from other traditions have of our faith and practice. It seems somehow strange to us that people who have entirely different ethnic and cultural backgrounds find value in our small and homely experience and want to be part of something that, in all honesty, we had become used to seeing rejected instead by the offspring of our communities’ founders.
But these are also the times that even the Divine Liturgy itself cries out to us, “Wisdom! Be attentive!” If we pay attention and stop to think about it, we can see all around us little signs of life. If you are fortunate, as I am, to belong to a parish that has seen new members you know what I am talking about. Something about us, something so intimate or familiar that we have taken it for granted and barely notice anymore, that something has drawn others into its light while we were busy worrying about our heating bills and parking lots.
That is why I am glad to be where I am, part of a little flock that is truly God’s own. As I listen to you sing “Christ is Risen” on Easter Sunday, I know that I am safe at home with you, sheltered in the loving arms of our Savior and wrapped about with the protecting mantle of his Mother. Come what may, I know this simple truth shines from the heart of all our communities, because I have seen how people of all kinds have found light, life, and safety in our midst, as have we. It does not matter whether the Berlin Wall or Wall Street is crumbling to bits all around us. We are safe and we are free, for Christ is risen indeed.
Romanian Catholics proclaim a day of fasting, prayer for justice: February 11Wednesday, February 11. 2009This article from CWN is fairly accurate. I would like to add only that the letter from His Grace, Bishop John Michael (which we read last Sunday in church) made a couple of very important points. First, that the basic principle at stake here is the simple commandment, "you shall not steal." Second, that Greek Catholics are not asking for churches in towns where there is no significant Greek Catholic community in need of its church building back. This is not about proselytizing through real estate. Third that this problem should not deter us in any way from our ecumenical responsibilities, no matter what the outcome. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this!!
Theophany blessingsWednesday, January 9. 2008Here's a great way to kick off a new year of discussing Orthodox-Catholic ecumenism!  On January 6, the feast of the Holy Theophany, in Oradea on the western edge of Romania, the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic bishops of the city met together to hold a service of blessing of water. After celebrating the Divine Liturgy in their respective churches, PS Sofronie Drinec (Orthodox, to the left of the photo in blue vestments) and PS Virgil Bercea (Greek-Catholic on the right in white vestments), together with many of their clergy and faithful, met in procession in the town center and proceded to the banks of the river Crisul Repede for the Great Blessing of Water. You can read more about the event (if your Romanian is better than mine!) here. And there are more pictures here. It is wonderful to see the ice breaking in a place where so much anger and bitterness has divided our churches. Incidentally, I've never been to Oradea, but it looks to be an incredibly beautiful city! Canonical territory, the subject that will not die...Monday, November 5. 2007Blatant name dropping...Wednesday, October 17. 2007
It's been a month, but I've finally succumbed to the temptation to post pictures of myself with the man who is now His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. They were taken in 2001 when I was travelling through Romania, together with my sister Sarah, as guests of Archimandrite Justin Marchis and the wonderful monastic church of Stavropoleos in Bucharest. During the visit we attended a pilgrimage at Secu Monastery in northern Moldavia on its patronal feast ("hram"), the Beheading of St. John the Forerunner on August 29. We were among thousands of pilgrims, many of whom came hundreds of miles and some of which walked or rode on carts drawn by horses. I can only claim a very brief exchange of pleasantries with the then Metropolitan of Moldavia who led the pilgrimage and served the main Divine Liturgy. I was delighted to attend the luncheon following the Liturgy at which the then Metropolitan led the conversation. He remember him as a delightful and charismatic prelate with plenty of good things to say about the need for ecumenical understanding between Catholics and Orthodox. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. I have plenty of other photos from this trip, which I am happy to post if people seem interested!
