I've often wondered about purgatory, vis a vis the Eastern Churches, in light of this article from the Union of Brest:

We shall not debate about purgatory, but we entrust ourselves to the teaching of the Holy Church.

I suppose it is a legitimate reading to assume that this is simple acquiescence to Rome on the subject. But I find the term "Holy Church" to be interesting, since this is one of only two uses of that phrase in the Union and that other use does not imply that it is simply standing in for "Rome". Indeed, throughout the document, the term "Roman Church" is used when referring to that body.

Is it a reasonable interpretation of the article on purgatory to assume that they left the question open?

Perfectly sensible. It's advice I should probably heed :-o

Of course, these terms were never actually accepted by Rome, on the charming grounds that one cannot place conditions on one's own salvation....

but what does 'existential' mean in this context?
